Are you a grad student or qualitative researcher who is just beginning to think about methodology as an object of knowledge? Would you like to share your experiences and thinking about qualitative research or propose a new way of doing qualitative research? Are you thinking about submitting a proposal to the QR SIG for AERA 2018?
As you know, it remains very difficult to get on the program at AERA and some qualitative researchers may benefit from support as they begin to prepare their submissions. You can receive that support now by signing up to be paired with an experienced QR SIG member who can read a draft of your proposal and offer you critical feedback! Although participating in the feedback forum does not guarantee acceptance, those who participated last year said the supportive feedback they received helped them to improve their work.

The Mentoring Committee will match you with a proposal reviewer and you will be expected to submit a draft of your proposal to your reviewer by July 7th. The Dreams, Possibilities, and Necessity of Public Education

The 2018 program theme calls us to confront the struggles for public education, considering the times in which we are living, the historical arcs that shape our present(s), and the roles we can play in the fight for justice. Public education has the potential to be a central pillar of democracy and to foster civil deliberation. It is essential to democratic government, which both depends on and makes possible respect for diversity, justice, and human dignity. It has a crucial role to play in our divided world, bringing communities together to build an inclusive formation of “we the people.”
The conference call asks us to consider:
• How can education research recognize the perspectives and knowledge of historically marginalized peoples?
• How can we produce disciplined and diverse scholarship?
• How can we generate and learn from a wide range of research, including empirical, philosophical, critical, and historical analyses?
• What have scholars learned from their own first-person experiences?
• Respecting the particularities of cultures, times, and places, how can we learn sensitively from one another’s contemporary experiences and histories?
These questions of knowledge and action to dream about the possibilities of educational research are the focus of the Annual Meeting. Given the theme, we welcome submissions that highlight how qualitative inquiry may serve to support and expand on dreams, possibilities, and necessity of public education.
Specifically, the Qualitative Research SIG invites papers that foreground discussions of qualitative inquiry. Qualitative Research includes a wide range of methodological, theoretical, and analytic approaches to education research, including but not limited to interpretive, critical, post-structural, and posthumanist frameworks and the multitude of approaches produced from working at these intersections.
The Qualitative Research SIG strongly encourages submissions that emphasize methodologically innovative approaches, which re-imagine and expand how qualitative inquiry might serve to produce scholarship and function (at the level of methodology) to dream of possibilities that we do not yet know. Submissions might consider: How might notions of dreaming and necessity be theorized and actualized at the level of methodology? What does it look like to do qualitative research that seeks to dream and create possibilities for education? What methodologies might be (re)envisioned in our divided methodological, social, and political worlds that could bring communities together, fosters civil dialogue, and support inclusive democracies? How can/does qualitative research prompt us to hear, witness, and learn sensitively from one another’s experiences and histories? More generally, how might we continue to envision our contributions to the future of (public) education and qualitative research?
We also encourage submissions that challenge methodological orthodoxy and help us transgress and push the boundaries of qualitative inquiry. While proposals that address the yearly theme are encouraged, high quality proposals on all topics that make contributions to qualitative inquiry are welcomed.
We invite scholars from all divisions and SIGs to submit proposals. The AERA online submission system is

Proposals for papers, posters, roundtables, and symposia/sessions are invited, and innovative session designs are encouraged. In order to accommodate flexibility in program decisions, please select all of the formats in which you would be willing to present your work. Every year there are far more spots available for poster presentations and roundtable papers than individual papers and symposia. Please also note that ‘working group roundtables’ and ‘structured poster sessions’ count as symposia (even though they are named to suggest otherwise), and thus compete against numerous other proposed sessions for a small number of slots. Both paper and symposia/session submissions must not identify the author(s) and/or discussant(s) in any way.
Please share this call for proposals with all who may be interested. The number of proposals and the size of our active membership determine the number of sessions allocated to each SIG. Please consider our SIG as a place to share your work and renew your SIG membership when you submit your proposals. Encourage students and colleagues to join our SIG, too.
