BEF 650: Critical Race Theory in Education 3 Credit Hours May 4– May 22, 2016 M-Th: 5:00 – 8:50 p.m. A. Course Description: In this seminar we explore the history, the theoretical underpinnings, and implications of Critical Race Theory (CRT) as related to education in both K-12 and Higher Education contexts. Beginning with readings in legal literature, we will then examine how these same theoretical constructs are deployed by educational theorists using CRT in the areas of pedagogy, curriculum, and educational policy. The course will end with an exploration of the implications of CRT for the field of education as directed by the individual interests of seminar participants. Students outside the field of education are also welcome in this course. B. Topics of Discussion: WEEK I CRITICAL RACE THEORY: KEY CONCEPTS WEEK II CRITICAL RACE THEORY IN EDUCATION WEEK III PUTTING CRITICAL RACE THEORY INTO PRAXIS C.
