Sponsored by The University of Alabama Writing Center and Graduate School, the 2015 Dissertation Writers’ Retreat will provide uninterrupted time and comfortable space for PhD students to:
· make progress on their dissertations;
· reflect on their writing skills and writing processes; and
· network with other doctoral students at the dissertation stage.
Participants will set goals at the start of the retreat; write for several hours each day; consider and critique their writing processes; and give brief oral presentations on their work in progress. Coaching from Writing Center staff will be available throughout the retreat.
The retreat will run for three weeks on Monday-Thursday, May 4th-7th, 11th -14th, and 18th -21st, 2015 in Lloyd Hall from 9:00am-3:00pm. Lunch, snacks and beverages will be provided. Wireless is available—but online research will be discouraged, as the main emphasis of the retreat will be writing.
The retreat will cost $200 per participant, funded by either the accepted graduate student’s department or a faculty member sponsor. Graduate students will directly apply using the link below. (The Graduate School will be sending the link directly to all doctoral students in the coming week.) The Writing Retreat administrators will organize the applications and then send a list of all applicants from a specific department to the corresponding graduate department chair. The chair will rank order the applicants and confirm that either the department or a faculty sponsor will commit to providing the $200 fee for at least one student.
Due to the intensive nature of this retreat, enrollment is strictly limited to fifteen participants. One spot per department, up to 15 spots, will be awarded. If more than 15 departments nominate students, spots will be awarded based on nominees’ initial application dates. Departments will not pay the fee if a student from their department is not accepted.
All prospective participants must complete the online application which requires the students to provide a cover letter, indicating what they intend to accomplish during the Retreat; a vita; and a statement of support from their dissertation director. The application deadline is Friday, March 27, 2014.

We wish to include qualified participants from a wide variety of academic disciplines. All applicants should have their prospectuses approved prior to applying. Priority will be given to candidates who
· need writing time—not research time; and/or
· have struggled with the writing process
· have not received fellowships previously; and/or
· have heavy teaching loads during the regular academic year.
